FCX Clarity - Full Hydrogen Wonder - Update

29 December, 2008 (18:04) | Information | By: editor

Honda has announced that their full-electric FCX hydrogen vehicle is now on limited release in California since last year. One of the first assembly line made Hydrogen powered cars, it is on the road for customer assessment and testing purposes so they can meet their commitment to fully offer it by 2010. The car is not a hybrid but a full Hydrogen powered electric car that incorporates some of the latest technology in alternative energy. The small footprint of the FCX Clarity makes it stand out being a production grade vehicle, it incorporates all the amenities of a gas powered vehicle. It also incorporates Honda’s proprietary Collision Mitigation Braking System(CMBS) that alerts the driver of potential braking hazards using lights, audible and mechanical alerts (seat belt tugging technology) allowing him to take appropriate action. The safety aspect is also perfect with regards to collision and the fact that the fuel it carries (compressed hydrogen) is highly explosive, with sensors and automatic cut-off valves for fuel and circuit breakers for the electrical power for increased safety.
The car is part of Honda’s approach towards a Hydrogen-Fuel Based society, having been involved in the Home Energy Station project. The system uses natural gas to produce hydrogen to power the home and vehicle thus eliminating the need for power off the grid.

The Honda FCX Clarity was released in July and Honda is leasing the 200 available cars to customers in California for the next three years. Thousands of car enthusiasts lined up to be among the few to lease the vehicle. Honda Clarity offers stylish and smooth, at the same time environment friendly with zero emissions. The car comes amidst the most difficult time of auto manufacturers. Sales this year from the car industry have been choked by the economy and credit crunch. Though finding a hydrogen fueling station is not an easy task. The car certainly delivers, its not just a publicity stunt. It is quiet, accelerates steadily, has a high torque and range of 280 miles. Previous versions of the fuel cell vehicle mostly looked like futuristic boxes. This time, the version is refined packed into a sedan. In the fuel cell, hydrogen combines with oxygen to produce electricity. The Clarity has reserved 288 volt Li-Ion battery, recharged when the car decelerates, so the cycle continues. The cockpit is a new concept. Fun to ride. The Clarity’s tank holds 4.1 kilograms of compressed hydrogen. Honda says that it travles 79 miles per gallon city driving.

Honda Civic and Accord defines Honda cars more than any other models the car manufacturer has ever produced. New models have been made, including the CR-V, Insight, Odyssey, and so much more. But these two make up the backbone of the Honda car manufacturing company. The Honda Civic came about around the early 1970s.It was also funnily called, pregnant roller skate. It was a mini contender with the American giants. But when the fuel shortage came crashing down the US economy, The Civic attracted the consumers with its fuel efficiency and reliability. Even up to now, you can still find vintage Honda Civics roaming American roads. Honda Accord followed suit in the early 1980s. It was a five passenger sedan. It quickly established itself as a segment must have with consumers. Just by the turn of the millenium, Honda Accord, became the best selling car in the US. Surpassing the ever unbeatable Toyota Camry. Since then, it has enjoyed huge market shares in the U.S. It is the level of the car’s quality and reliability which makes Honda cars, a leader in value and dependability.

Like much of the car market today, it is the Japanese who have been most productive to develop attractive looking hybrid vehicles, such as the hybrid powered Honda Accord and Toyota Prius. Contrary to what one might believe, these cars have also been a great success on the market.

The idea of saving on gas is obviously appealing to a lot of people.

Hybrid cars mixed an electric engine with a gasoline powered one, which means the use of gasoline isn’t totally out of the picture but it can be greatly lessened. The dual engines also allow for smaller engines to be used, and they take advantage of things like regenerative breaking.

Unsurprisingly these hybrid cars are also extremely lightweight and aerodynamically well designed, all to reduce the energy needed to run them. In slow city traffic the conventional engine is automatically shut of completely, producing no emissions whatsoever. When more speed and power is needed, the conventional engine is allowed to seamlessly kick in partially or fully.
